Recent headlines declare that “American Support for Israel Is Faltering.” It’s true that public opinion surveys in the U.S. and other Western democracies show declining sympathy for the Jewish state. But the story behind those numbers is far more complex—and far more urgent—than the media admits.
If we care about truth, justice, and the survival of Israel—the only democracy in the Middle East—we must not passively accept this trend. We must challenge it.
The Numbers—and the Narrative Behind Them
An August Economist/YouGov poll shows that:
- 71% of Americans believe there is a “hunger crisis” in Gaza.
- 78% favor an “immediate ceasefire.”
- By 3 to 1, Americans favor cutting military aid to Israel over increasing it.
- 43% believe Israel is committing “genocide” in Gaza.
On the surface, this looks grim. But these figures do not emerge in a vacuum—they are the result of an unprecedented propaganda war. Hamas and its allies flood social media with manipulated images, false casualty numbers, and one-sided narratives designed to portray Israel as an aggressor while erasing the cause of this conflict: Hamas’s brutal October 7 massacre, which left over 1,200 Israelis dead and more than 250 taken hostage.
This is not simply a “shift in opinion.” It’s the predictable fruit of disinformation.
The Truth About Gaza’s Suffering
Let’s be clear: civilians in Gaza are suffering, but not because Israel is targeting them indiscriminately. The root cause is Hamas’s choice to embed military operations in schools, hospitals, and apartment buildings, and to steal humanitarian aid for its fighters.
Israel, even while under fire, has facilitated massive amounts of humanitarian aid into Gaza—more than any other nation in history has done while fighting a war of survival. No other country facing rocket attacks and suicide bombers would allow this.
Why “Ceasefire Now” is Dangerous
Calls for an immediate ceasefire ignore a central reality: Hamas is still armed, still entrenched, and still vowing to repeat October 7 “again and again.” A ceasefire without Hamas’s dismantlement would only guarantee more war, more civilian casualties, and more regional instability.
Israel does not seek war—it seeks safety for its people. Lasting peace will only come when the terrorist threat is neutralized.
The Political Divide—and the Path Forward
It’s true that support for Israel remains strongest among older Republicans, but this is not simply a partisan issue. We are witnessing an educational and moral crisis: younger Americans have been raised on social media feeds rather than historical facts. They have been taught to see Israel not as a miraculous rebirth of a biblical homeland, but as a “colonizer” in a false narrative imported from other contexts.
This is why our mission as Christians and Jews United for Israel is so urgent. We must reclaim the moral conversation, equip the next generation with truth, and remind the world that Israel’s fight is our fight—a fight for civilization against barbarism.
The Global Stakes
Western governments—Germany, the U.K., France, Canada—are flirting with the recognition of a Palestinian state while Hamas still holds hostages and launches attacks. This sends a dangerous message: terrorism pays.
If Israel’s enemies succeed in isolating her diplomatically, they will be emboldened—not only in Gaza, but in Lebanon, Iran, and beyond. And make no mistake: the same forces that seek Israel’s destruction hate the freedoms we hold dear in the West.
Our Call to Action
We cannot afford silence. We must:
- Speak truth in our churches, synagogues, and communities.
- Challenge misinformation whenever it appears.
- Support Israel publicly and materially—through donations, advocacy, and prayer.
- Educate the next generation about Israel’s history, legitimacy, and moral cause.
The polls may say support for Israel is faltering. But with courage, clarity, and conviction, we can turn the tide.
Israel’s survival is not just an Israeli issue. It is a moral test for all who claim to stand for truth and justice. As Christians and Jews united, we will not fail that test.
