What Is a Proxy War?
A proxy war is when a nation uses third parties to fight its battles instead of engaging directly. For Iran, this strategy allows it to attack Israel, threaten U.S. allies, and destabilize the region—all while avoiding direct confrontation that could trigger full-scale retaliation.
Who Are Iran’s Proxies?
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), especially its elite Quds Force, has spent decades building a network of militant groups loyal to Tehran’s vision of Islamic domination and Israel’s destruction. Here are a few key players:
- Hezbollah – Based in Lebanon, Hezbollah is Iran’s most powerful proxy. It has over 100,000 rockets aimed at Israel and is deeply embedded in Lebanese society.
- Hamas – Although Sunni, Hamas has accepted Iranian funding and weapons. It governs the Gaza Strip and launched the brutal October 7, 2023, terror attack that ignited this round of war.
- Islamic Jihad – Another Gaza-based militant group, closely aligned with Iran.
- Houthis – Operating from Yemen, they’ve targeted Israel with ballistic missiles and drones and attacked international shipping.
- Shiite militias in Iraq and Syria – Used by Iran to harass U.S. bases and support Assad’s regime.

Why Does Iran Target Israel?

They refer to Israel as the “Little Satan” (America is the “Great Satan”) and see its elimination as necessary for ushering in their version of Islamic redemption.
But the reasons are also strategic:
- Israel is the strongest democratic power in the Middle East. Iran wants to dominate the region. Israel stands in the way.
- Israel is an ally of the U.S. and the West. Attacking Israel is a way of challenging Western influence.
- A war with Israel unites Iran’s fractured domestic population. With rising discontent at home, war is a distraction.
What’s the Endgame?
Iran’s goal is to wear Israel down—militarily, economically, psychologically. By attacking from all sides and hiding behind proxies, Iran hopes to weaken Israel’s will to fight and divide the international community.
But Israel is not alone.

This is not just Israel’s fight. It’s a battle for the survival of a free, democratic, covenant nation surrounded by regimes that preach hate, fund terror, and murder civilians.
It’s also a wake-up call for the West. Iran’s weapons don’t stop at Israel’s borders. Their drones and missiles have reached U.S. bases, Saudi oil fields, and international cargo ships. This is a global threat disguised as a regional conflict.
As people of faith, we must not be passive observers. We are called to be watchmen on the walls (Isaiah 62:6) and defenders of truth.
