As the Jewish people enter Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year, we are reminded of the weight and the hope of this sacred season. It is a time of reflection, repentance, and prayer—a day when Jews worldwide seek forgiveness from God and from one another, striving to begin anew with clean hearts.
Yom Kippur calls us not only to fast and pray, but to reflect on our responsibility in the world. It is about personal atonement, but also about our shared duty to pursue peace, justice, and righteousness. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that the fast God desires is not only abstaining from food but “to unlock the fetters of wickedness, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke” (Isaiah 58:6).
For those of us standing for Israel and for the values of freedom and dignity, Yom Kippur has an added resonance. We recall the courage and sacrifice of Israel’s defenders during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, when the nation’s very survival was tested. Their legacy reminds us that our faith calls us not only to seek peace with God, but also to safeguard life and freedom against those who would destroy it.
As Jews fast, pray, and ask for forgiveness, and as Christians stand in solidarity with their Jewish brothers and sisters, may this holy day be an inspiration for renewal—not only of our souls, but of our shared commitment to a world rooted in justice, faith, and lasting peace.
G’mar Chatimah Tovah—May you be sealed for a good year.
