In recent days, Israel has delivered one of the most consequential blows yet to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, dealing damage to critical infrastructure, eliminating top nuclear scientists, and disrupting key components of Iran’s bomb-making supply chain. But while this bold campaign has undoubtedly set Tehran back, it has not yet delivered a knockout punch.
For years, Israel has made it abundantly clear that it will not tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran. That moment of confrontation has now arrived. And while the early phases of this operation have demonstrated Israel’s precision, resolve, and superior intelligence capabilities, major hurdles remain—chief among them: Iran’s most fortified and secretive enrichment facility, Fordow.
What Has Been Achieved?
According to Israeli and U.N. sources, in just a few days Israel has:
- Knocked out centrifuge cascades at Natanz, Iran’s largest and most crucial enrichment site.
- Destroyed major facilities at Isfahan, including Iran’s uranium conversion plant and fuel fabrication center—both essential to creating nuclear material.
- Eliminated up to 10 of Iran’s most experienced nuclear scientists, individuals who helped shape Iran’s weaponization efforts prior to 2003.
- Possibly caused an underground implosion at Natanz, further compounding the site’s long-term damage.
This unprecedented assault may have set Iran’s nuclear program back by years. Indeed, rebuilding the fuel fabrication plant alone could take up to a year—assuming Iran has not secretly hidden away critical equipment.
The Fordow Challenge
Despite these strategic victories, the Fordow facility remains untouched. Buried deep inside a mountain near Qom, Fordow is where Iran continues to enrich uranium to 60% purity—close to weapons-grade levels. Destroying this site may require munitions that only the United States possesses, particularly large bunker-busting bombs capable of penetrating deeply fortified underground chambers.
Former U.S. negotiator Richard Nephew put it bluntly: “If you are worried about a nuclear breakout, Fordow is the game.” Without neutralizing this site, Iran retains a pathway to quickly complete a nuclear bomb.
The Stockpile Threat
Iran’s current stockpile of enriched uranium is enough to build 9–13 nuclear weapons in the coming months if enrichment continues unabated. The Israeli government has cited intelligence suggesting that Iran might disperse this stockpile across the country, a key factor that may have prompted the timing of Israel’s strike.
The danger is not just Fordow—it’s also what we don’t see. Iran has denied international inspectors access to surveillance footage and may have hidden centrifuge parts and other key components for future use. Even a small underground site could become a clandestine bomb factory if not discovered in time.
A Moment for Moral Clarity
The attack on Iran’s nuclear program is not just a military operation—it is a moral imperative. Iran’s regime continues to call for the destruction of Israel, finances terrorist proxies from Gaza to Lebanon to Yemen, and has plotted assassinations on U.S. soil. A nuclear-armed Iran would not be merely a regional crisis—it would be a global catastrophe.
Israel’s courageous stand has bought the world time. But time alone is not enough. The United States and other free nations must now stand shoulder to shoulder with Israel, not just in word but in deed. That means:
- Providing advanced bunker-busting munitions and other military support.
- Enhancing Israeli air and missile defense systems against retaliation.
- Reinforcing diplomatic and intelligence efforts to root out covert nuclear activity.
Conclusion: The Battle Is Not Over
Israel has done what it must to defend its people, delay a nuclear Iran, and safeguard global security. But if this campaign ends without neutralizing Fordow and Iran’s uranium stockpiles, the threat will re-emerge—possibly stronger and more determined than before.
This is a defining moment for the international community. Will we stand by our ally in its hour of need? Or will we risk a world where the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism possesses the most dangerous weapon known to man?
